Carmaker Peugeot is looking to break into the growing UK car club market, launching a pilot vehicle rental service in two English cities.
'Mu by Peugeot’ already operates in five dealerships in Paris as well as Brest, Lyon, Nantes and Rennes in France. It is also available in capital cities in Germany, Spain and Italy. The service is now being tested in the UK through two Peugeot dealerships in London and Bristol.
The service allows drivers who sign up to the scheme and pre-pay with 'Mu’ points, to hire a range of Peugeot vehicles, from scooters to vans, via the Peugeot dealer network. Drivers can hire vehicles for a half a day up to a week or even longer. Tariffs range from £18 for half a day for a scooter up to £300 for a Boxer Van for a week.
Car clubs are a growing phenomenon across the UK and Europe. They offer an alternative to residents and businesses that don't want to own or run their own vehicles, thereby helping to reduce carbon emissions and road congestion. In the past 12 months, membership of UK car clubs has nearly doubled from 64,679 members to 112,928, according to the Department for Transport.

Commenting on the launch of the Mu by Peugeot pilot, UK managing director Jon Goodman, said the scheme was finding solutions to "current economic and environmental challenges.
"Never before has the rental customer been exposed to such an extensive product range, combined with periods of loan that offer flexible mobility and convenience," he added.
Potential customers can view the range of vehicles available to hire, as well as obtain and top up a Mu card via a dedicated Peugeot website.
Two Robins and Day Peugeot Dealerships are piloting the scheme in Chiswick, London, and in Bristol.
Peugeot plans to deploy the service in nine European countries between now and 2011.
In April, the world’s largest car club, Zipcar, acquired UK rival Streetcar in a £32 million deal with the aim of becoming the leader car club operator in Europe.
