Friends seem like a rare commodity nowadays. Finding one who will be with you through some of the most important, even the saddest, events in your life is quite difficult. But here’s good news to all “friend-seekers” out there, there’s a website that allows people to rent friends who can accompany them to social events like parties and celebrations, or who can visit their relatives for them if they can’t do it themselves, or who can introduce them to new people. The site can be found at www.rentafriend.com.
Rent a Friend is the largest network of “friends for hire” within the United States and Canada. It was created by Scott Rosenbaum of New Jersey. He wanted to provide people a way to find friends at times when they feel that they have none. The site allows users to search for friends just by using ZIP codes. This makes it very easy for members to use the site. Rent a Friend is just six months old but it already has about 200,000 “friends”. It averages at least 100,000 visitors per month.
The hourly rate for renting a friend ranges from $10 to $150. But the usual rate for activities like dining at a restaurant, watching a movie, or attending a yoga class is between $20 to $50 per hour. The creator of the site emphasizes the”zero tolerance” policy with regards to sexual advances toward hired friends. Some critics say that the site is helpful but it can certainly change the way people perceive friendship.
